ReachOUT: LGBTQ+ Standup Comedy Benefit Show
We all know that Columbus, Ohio is a great place to live if you are LGBTQ+. It's mostly safe; many businesses and civic associations are owned, operated and staffed by LGBTQ+ community; we even have openly LGBTQ+ elected leaders; and nothing really exemplifies Columbus's better qualities quite like our annual Pride festivals each June. Most of Ohio isn't Columbus.
Many cities and small towns outside of Ohio's three «Big C's» still lack employment and housing protections for LGBTQ+ people. In some places, pervasive bigotry and a disconnect between community members allows for violence against members of the community to go unrecognized and unaddressed. That's why we're holding ReachOUT: a standup comedy benefit show. If we ever want to perpetuate systemic change in how LGBTQ+ people are treated outside of our largest cities, we need to ReachOUT and support the members of our communities that are having these difficult conversations and fighting (and sometimes losing) battles on the ground.
Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Newark, Ohio Pride and Columbus, Indiana Pride.
Newark, Ohio had their very first festival this year. However, you may have seen the news that the Licking County Commissioners have decided to implement a new policy preventing private groups from requesting the lighting of the county courthouse for events specifically in response to the Pride Festival’s request. While the simple lighting of the court house might not seem like a huge roadblock to LGBTQ+ people, it’s important to keep this in context – while Newark has city ordinance preventing housing or employment discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, Licking County does not and LGBTQ+ people outside of the city’s borders, or those living in Pataskala and Heath, have only the protections given to them by state law, which are few and far between. We’re proud to stand with the organizers of Newark Pride and LGBTQ+ people across Licking County tonight and we hope what we raise here this evening will help give Newark leaders what they need to keep progress moving forward!
Columbus, Indiana: Same name, smaller town, and the boyhood home of the Dark Lord of the Corn himself, Mike Pence. A local high schooler organized Columbus, Indiana’s first pride event this year and we’re excited to be donating tonight to help keep this event going strong.
