We will be hosting a series of community education on the use of the outdoor ethics principles developed by The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Leave No Trace has developed a seven principles to help minimize our environmental impact while participating in outdoor recreation. There are concepts for both the «frontcountry» such as parks and family camping and less traveled wilderness areas known as the «backcountry.»

Each class will introduce several of the principles and provide some hands on discovery of the processes. Participants are encouraged to attend one session or all. Should you want to attend all, please sign up for each class separately.

Session 1 —
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare/Know Before You Go
— Map and Compass
— Rules and Regulations, terrain
— Permits
-Ten essentials – water and first aid
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces/Choose the Right Path
— What is a durable surface?
— Stick to the trail, appropriate shoes
3. Dispose of Waste Properly/Trash Your Trash
— Carry in/Carry out
— Repackage foods
— Trowel/Cat Holes
— Micro Garbage/Micro Foods
— Dishwater/filters

Session 2 —
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare/Know Before You Go
— Map and Compass
— Rules and Regulations
— Permits
4. Leave What You Find
— Artifacts
— Wildlife (flowers, animal remains, understory)
— transporting seeds and bugs
5. Respect Wildlife
— Don’t feed wildlife/store your food out of reach
— bear bags/food cache
— Micro foods/trash
— observe from a safe distance
— minimize noise
— Riparian Zones

Session 3 —
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare/Know Before You Go
— Map and Compass
— Rules and Regulations
— Permits
6. Minimize Campfire Impact/Be Careful with Fire
— Established fire rings
— Mound and pan fires
— Gas stoves
Four Ds: Down, Dinky, Dead and Distant
7. Be Consider of Other Vistors/Be Kind to Other Vistors
— Noise (music, yelling, late night activities)
— Yield to others on the trail
— Loud colors

These classes are for everyone (ages 6+). Families, novice hikers, and experienced backpackers all find this course fun and informative. Small group activities will be part of each class.

Meet our Instructor — Ted Shigley
Ted is a Leave No Trace Master Educator and TreadLightly Master. He is an avid backpacker, runner, and outdoor enthusiast. Ted is currently serving as the BSA Simon Kenton Council Outdoor Ethics Advocate. He has led backpacking treks with Scouts on the Appalachian Trail and works with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy as a Konnarock trail maintenance crew volunteer along the southern section. He also in on the trail crew of the Buckeye Trail.
