Thanks to the hard work of activists, AEP is taking steps to bring more clean energy and electric vehicle infrastructure to central Ohio. Now, we need to make sure the Public Utility Commission of Ohio supports these moves on clean energy as well.
Last year, AEP proposed a big increase in the fixed monthly charge you have to pay for electricity. Activists packed hearings and sent thousands of messages opposing this proposal while calling for AEP to instead focus on clean energy and the future. As a result of this public outcry, AEP abandoned the proposed charge, agreed to invest millions in new electric vehicle infrastructure in central Ohio, and to take critical next steps to bring forward significant clean energy development; notably the proposed wind and solar projects Sierra Club members and supporters secured in an agreement with AEP in 2015.
Now, we need to fill a public hearing on February 12th, in Columbus, to make sure AEP’s new plan come to fruition.
It’s imperative we pack this hearing and make sure the PUCO hears strong, sustained, and significant public support for clean energy. This year, AEP should be moving forward with plans for 400 mws of solar in Appalachian Ohio — a huge commitment that has a further goal of attracting a solar panel manufacturer to set up operations in the region as well. This is the sort of transformational project that provides the type of real, future focused, opportunities for Ohio’s coal country that we need. But, that only happens if we AEP customers show the PUCO we want it to happen.
